FIS beruht auf einer Technik, die sich WWW ( W orld W ide W eb) nennt. WWW ist eine Client-Server-Anwendung. Die Server heißen HTTP-Daemons. Sie kommunizieren mit den Clients, über ein Protokoll, das sich HTTP ( H yper T ext T ransfer P rotocol) nennt. Die Clients sind entweder textbasiert (wie z.B. Lynx) oder grafisch orientiert (wie z. B. Mosaic).
