IMSE in a nutshell

- Two year Master programme
- Fast growing discipline of services science
- Graduates in high demand because of global need for service innovation
- Focus on service economy growth and globally integrated enterprises
- Fully integrated curriculum, offered by three top universities in Europe: University of Stuttgart (Germany), the University of Crete (Greece) and Tilburg University (The Netherlands)

Global partnerships

IMSE is also delivered in close cooperation with a number of top quality research institutes, such as UC Berkeley (USA), the University of New South Wales (Australia), Tsinghua University (China) and international companies like ForthNet, IBM, Software AG, Accenture and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. This not only guarantees a curriculum that incorporates the latest developments in the field of service engineering, but also stresses the global orientation of the programme.

Programme overview

The IMSE programme (120 ECTS) is organised in four successive phases over two academic years:

1. Development and monitoring of software services (University of Stuttgart)
2. Analysis of service enabled business processes (University of Crete)
3. Design of software services (Tilburg University)
4. Internship and Master thesis: Services Science Topics (any location inside/outside Europe)

The first year comprises the first two phases: during the first phase students learn about middleware platform- and programming models to realise software services, while during the second phase they are trained in analysis and design of software services that realise global business processes.

In the second year, the emphasis shifts towards socio-economic analysis of service-enabled processes in service networks, and optimizing service network performance in terms of business-level key performance indicators (KPIs). The second semester of year two is devoted to an internship to gain valuable work experience and theoretical thesis work.

How to apply?

The programme is open to students with a Bachelor’s or equivalent undergraduate degree (180 ECTS) either in Management/Economics/Business Administration or in Computer Science/Information System. Students with an engineering degree can be admitted if their previous education includes IT and information systems. In addition, it is compulsory to send us your GMAT or GRE test scores and your English language test results before the application deadline. Erasmus Mundus programme: International Master in Service Engineering (IMSE)

Many experts see the explosive growth in services as the next major revolution in the world economy. Because service economies continue to expand and powerful digital communications networks - such as the Internet - evolve rapidly, companies are transformed from regional businesses to globally integrated enterprises. The fast growing discipline of services science and engineering is related to service economy growth and the global need for service innovation. Research and education in this field is therefore in high demand. This is in a nutshell why Tilburg University has established cooperation with the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and the University of Crete (Greece) in offering highly-motivated students the International Master in Service Engineering (IMSE). The multi-disciplinary IMSE programme has been carefully designed at the interface of software service systems and new globe-spanning business processes to prepare students with a background in either business or information technology to become the new generation of service engineers. This full-time English-taught programme totals 120 ECTS credits and needs to be completed within 2 years. After a kick-off summer school in Crete, students spend a semester in Germany, followed by a semester in the Netherlands and Greece. The final semester is devoted to thesis work, which includes an internship in an internationally operating company or research institute either inside or outside Europe. Upon completion, students earn a joint Master’s degree in Services Science.
